Go to the official state pageWHAT IS THE REAL ID, AND WHEN IS IT STARTING TO BE ISSUED in Texas?

From the last quarter of this year, every State will have to start issuing a new identification card called REAL ID, which is a new type of identification with more secure standards on its issue process. Whenever a person needs to identify him/herself with official purposes, like i.e. if someone needs to enter a federal facility, board a commercial aircraft or enter a Nuclear power plant, he or she will have to present a REAL ID card.
The deadline to get your REAL ID card is set to October 1st 2021, by this time it is set that all the different States will be issuing them, and every legal resident in the United States would have to have this new type of identification to be able to move around the United States.
Please bear in mind that from October 1st, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), will only accept the Identification cards and Driving licenses that comply with the REAL ID standards and are issued by a REAL ID compliant State. The Department of Homeland Security is working really hard to help and assist all the different territories for them to be able to issue the new REAL ID cards by the deadline.
The REAL ID is not a national identification card, and it doesn't create a centralized federal database. We would like to leave clear that every State will keep issuing their own cards with its characteristics and will keep having their own records.
There are some Drivers licenses that are still acceptable, like the Enhanced Drivers licenses issued in Michigan, New York, Vermont, Minnesota and Washington.
To get your REAL ID card you will have to make an appointment on your State driving license agency website and check the required papers you will have to present, most of the States will request documentation that shows your Full name and date of birth, your Social Security Number, your address and your legal Status.
If you are not sure that your ID is compliant with the REAL ID Identification card, you can check if your card has one of these marks.

Anyway, if you have any doubts it is better to ask your State agency than to risk yourself being denied to board a commercial flight, or enter a Federal facility, because of not having a Valid ID.
The Transportation Security Administration also accepts other identification documents in case you have to travel, like the passport for example, just to be sure, before you have to use your ID visit the TSA website to check what are your other options.
Who can apply for a REAL ID in Texas?
The REAL ID is for all American citizens, every american must apply for a REAL ID before October first.
The Department of Homeland Security, in some cases, will allow some Special REAL IDs to non citizens or immigrants with no documentation, always with the difference that these cards will be marked with some other characteristics, symbols or color. If you are interested in this kind of cards, please visit the DHS website to check if you are allowed to apply for one of these REAL ID cards.
Another group of people that can apply for these cards are all of those with an Employment Authorization Document. They can apply for a REAL ID card which will be temporary until its expiration date. (In this case you will also need to be in possession of a Social Security Number).
There have been some modifications and additions to the REAL ID Act, so if you are not sure you are entitled to have this Identification card, we recommend you to ask for assistance to you local State Agency or to visit the DHS website.
WHAT IF I HAVE A FLIGHT BOOKED?
Every person planning to fly around the States after October 1 2021, must keep in mind that a REAL ID will be mandatory to go through the checkpoint at the airport, if someone is not in possession of the new REAL ID, this person may be allowed to board and Aircraft by using the passport as an alternative way to be identified. Otherwise, if you plan to fly before this date, the DHS and the TSA will allow you to travel with all the current driver's license and identification cards issued by your State.
If you are travelling with a minor under 18 years of age, the REAL ID is not required, and a regular ID will be enough to cross the security checkpoint.
Please bear in mind that the REAL ID does not allow people to cross the border into Canada or Mexico, nor even to travel in an International cruise, a passport instead will be the necessary document to make this international travel. REAL ID will be only used in this case to travel around the United States.
WHAT DO I NEED TO GET MY REAL ID CARD?
As we said before, all American citizens and residents of the United States must obtain their REAL ID before OCtober 1st 2021. To this purpose, the following documentation will be required for your State agency:
- Your current ID with full name and date of birth - Passport if you are from a foreign country with a valid VISA.
- Your Social Security Number - If you are from a foreign country, you will be required to bring your Employer Authorization Document or any valid document that allows you to work and reside in the States for a period of time.
- 2 proof of your principal local address - Please keep in mind that It is really important that you bring two.
- Any Document of your Legal Status - you need to bring any proof in the case you are married, divorced or explaining your situation.
Keep in mind that the process for obtaining or renewing your REAL ID card, will be in person, and it is not acceptable to do it remotely. Every State is in charge of their own database needed to issue the REAL ID card, so keeping that in mind, you may want to check your State specific requirements before your appointment.
Non compliant States with REAL ID.
The DHS is working really hard with all the States to comply with the REAL ID by the deadline. In the case you find out yourself in the situation that by the time when October comes your States does not issue this new type of identification, you will have two options:
Report the situation to the DHS - In some scenarios there is the possibility that the jurisdiction will be granted with an extension, in which case the DHS will closely work with their officials to comply with this new rule ASAP.
You can apply for a regular ID, the one can be used for certain purposes except for the official ones. In this case, your ID will have some inscription establishing that your ID "Is not valid for official purposes", so it will have to be replaced in some cases for example by the passport.
Enhanced Driver's License:
These drivers licenses are acceptable as valid IDs to cross the border into Canada or Mexico. The list of States who comply and Issue this kind of cards are: New York, Minnesota, Vermont, Washington and Michigan. These cards are approved by the Secretary of Homeland Security to be used as border cross IDs by land or sea due to the fact that those have a Radio Frequency Identification Chip and comply with the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative.
